Results

  • Up to 95% of them said they experienced negative emotions in the past month and 25% of them experienced it frequently.

  • All participants actively take different levels of self-regulation when they experience negative emotions and 60% of them will do it through listening to music.

  • It's worth noting that up to 89% of participants said they would listen to music when they were in a good mood or in a bad mood. Therefore, we decide that when the app detects that the user's mood is ‘great’ or ‘awful’, it will pop up a window asking if the user need to play some music.

  • Another important feedback from the online survey is that 64% of participants believe that their favorite music is more effective in regulating their negative emotions than the soothing music. Based on this, we decide to add the “One-click to import your song lists” function in our app (To do this, we will cooperate with Netease Cloud Music) to provide users with multiple listening modes.

Method 2: Interview

We did a semi-structured interview with two target users, including a 23-year-old female student in KCL (Pearl) and a 28-year-old male office worker in China (John). We firstly asked about their daily emotional state and their use of music apps. Later, we explained the main functions of Mood Enhancer and asked them what they thought.

Key Results

  • Both of them love to use NetEase Cloud Music and they especially love its function of recommending music based on algorithms. Therefore, we intend to enrich the music recommendation technology we use and recommend music to users based both on scientific evidence and their personal preferences.

  • Both of them do not understand the voiceprint technology used in our app and worry about their privacy. They are afraid that the content of their speech may be recorded and used for other purposes. Therefore, we decide to give a detailed explanation of the voiceprint recognition technology when the app is initialized and let users decide when to start or stop the voiceprint collection process to eliminate their concern.
